About Us

How it all began....

Ishigaki was started in January 1994. A group of guys who had been training in a regular club decided that they wanted to train in an environment where sexuality would be no issue. After a bit of political negotiation, Ishigaki was established.

Since then Ishigaki has flourished and we have had around 20 people grade to black belt and beyond. We have several black belt instructors headed by Simon Powell (fifth dan, club sensei and membership secretary), Sandy Mackay (fourth dan and club treasurer) they form the committee that organizes the club and its events.
Part of Jikishin Ju-Jitsu Association

Ishigaki is part of a much larger organisation called Jikishin Ju-Jitsu Association and we train to Jikishin’s regulations and syllabus. We grade at Jikishin gradings and, through them, were part of the British Ju-Jitsu Association Governing Body until 2011 when Jikishin decided to set up its own governing body the UK Martial Arts Governing Body.

We maintain strong links with, and are well supported by, our senior instructors and with other martial artists around the globe.
