About Ishigaki Ju-Jitsu Club

Ishigaki was started in January 1994 by a group of gay people who trained in a straight Ju-Jitsu club. Having become tired of the ‘macho’ atmosphere, and the feeling that they were second-class club members, they decided that the best way to find a club where they would be happy to train was to set a club up and run it themselves. After much wrangling and behind the scene goings on Ishigaki was born.

Ishigaki has several black belt instructors (or senseis): Simon Powell, a fourth dan, is the club sensei. With Sandy Mackay also a third dan and Roger Bunnage, graded at second dan, they form the committee that structures and runs the club.

Ishigaki is part of a much larger organisation called Jikishin Ju-Jitsu Association and so we teach according to Jikishin’s syllabus and grade for higher belts at Jikishin gradings. Jikishin is part of the British Ju-Jitsu Association which is in turn affiliated to the Sports Council. What this means is that Ishigaki is a bona fide martial arts club, not a system thought up an independent martial artist. This gives our gradings credibility not just within the UK but all over the world through the links our senior instructors have with other martial artists around the globe.
